Soil erosion may have caused pipeline break
Soil erosion from a creek bank has been listed as the preliminary cause of the May 20 rupture of a natural gas pipeline owned by the Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co.
The resulting blaze illuminated the nighttime sky for miles around southeastern Howard County beginning around 9 o’clock that evening, causing a massive emergency response and the evacuation of several rural families in a 4 square mile area.
Panhandle Eastern spokesman John Barnett of Houston, Tex., told the Fayette Advertiser Monday that a report covering the company’s initial investigation has been sent to the U.S Department of Transportation.
The 24-inch main ran under a creek and Barnett said that Panhandle investigators believe that dirt from the creek bank created stress on the 69-year-old pipe, causing a nearby coupling to separate. What ignited the natural gas is not known.
The pipeline is normally about three feet underground.
Barnett said the company continues to pursue the investigation. He noted that because of the information gleaned, Panhandle Eastern will survey other similar creek crossings where a steep bank is involved. >>>Click on headline for full report.

Completion of Glasgow bridge set for September
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced an estimated mid-September completion date of the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow. MoDOT also guarantees the ferry service will continue operation until the bridge is open to traffic; and the service will be free of charge to all motorists beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The bridge was closed to traffic on Aug. 4, 2008, for partial reconstruction, and was scheduled to reopen approximately one year after the closure. The $14.8 million contract included monetary incentives if the bridge opened in less than 365 days, and penalties if the project extended past the Aug. 3, 2009, completion date.
This spring, frequent rains and high water levels in the Missouri River have delayed the erection of the steel girders across the river, causing the loss of critical working days. >>> Click on headline for full report.

Fayette wraps up Jr. Babe Ruth season with sweep
 |
| Fayette pitcher Vince Hilderbrand slides under the tag at third base as the ball got by New Franklin third baseman Dalton Welbern in the third inning on Friday at Estes Field. |
By Greg Jackson
Sports Editor
For the Fayette Falcons, it would be nearly impossible to win the Quad Cities regular season baseball title in Jr. Babe Ruth league play. But it’s not necessarily impossible.
Here’s the scenario the Falcons faced entering their last two games of the season:
• They needed to win both games of a doubleheader on Friday to even stay alive in the race. One loss and Glasgow clinched.
• They needed New Franklin to sweep a doubleheader against Glasgow on Tuesday.
All of this, just to clinch a tie for first place.
The Falcons checked the first goal off the list, sweeping the doubleheader at Estes Field in Fayette, first winning 14-4 over New Franklin and then 12-2 over Glasgow. With the two victories, Fayette finished the regular season with a 6-4 record.
Now Fayette has to play the waiting game, hoping that New Franklin can play the role of spoiler against Glasgow on Tuesday. Unfortunately, results from that doubleheader were not available at press time.

FHS football continues to show improvement at Centralia Tournament
 |
| Fayette quarterback Dalton LeNoir looks downfield for an open player during the Central Methodist University football camp on June 12. |
It was the same scenario for the FHS Falcons football team heading into Saturday’s 7-on-7 Centralia Tournament.
After being the smallest school taking part in the Central Methodist University camp a couple weeks earlier, the Falcons were again one of the smaller schools taking part in this tournament.
And to tell the truth, that didn’t bother Fayette coach Billy Huthman in the least, as his team continues to prepare for the fall 2009 season.
“It’s the first time we’ve done the 7-on-7 camp,” Huthman said. “We had people in positions that they shouldn’t have been in. Being here and going against different teams, it was just a tough scheme to find success. We see everybody just challenging themselves.”
The Falcons played in five games at the tournament, where Huthman used a quarterback, a center, a tailback and four wide receivers as his seven players on offense.
The record didn’t quite compare to that at the CMU camp. The Falcons were able to defeat South Callaway and tie Macon, but they suffered losses to Bowling Green, Moberly and Class 6 Hickman.
