Death claims CMU Board Chairman

Bob Shaner
The Central Methodist family is today mourning the death of longtime university benefactor Bob Shaner who died Saturday evening at his home in Hilton Head, S.C., following a lengthy illness. He was 60.

A 1970 CMU graduate and well-known here, Shaner was currently serving as chairman of the Central Methodist Board of Trustees.

He was married to Fayette native Louann Thogmorton. She survives, in addition to two children. Also surviving are his father-in-law and mother-in-law, retired CMU Dean of Students James Thogmorton and his wife, Helen, both of Fayette.

In noting Shaner’s passing, CMU President Marianne Inman said: “We can all be grateful for his life of service and commitment to Central Methodist University and that he is now in a wonderful, peaceful place free of pain and suffering.”

Until retiring due to illness, Shaner had been a key executive in the telecommunications industry for Cingular/AT&T. He had pioneered in the development of cell phone technology and was instrumental in bringing that service to France.

Funeral services are pending in Shaner’s hometown of Farmington, Mo.

Glasgow bridge demoliiton begins

Early Monday morning

Smoke and flames arise from the two western-most spans on the 83-year-old Missouri River Highway 240 Bridge at Glasgow following an implosion shortly before 7 a.m. today (Monday). The action means that full-scale demolition work has begun on the bridge’s superstructure.

MoDOT originally had announced that three spans would come down today, but this was scaled-back to two by the construction company. The spans landed for the most part entirely on the shore of the Saline County side of the river.

Ferry service resumed around 7:15 a.m. and the river was again re-opened to traffic. Ferry service runs seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A MoDOT spokeswoman said that it’s still undetermined as to whether additional spans will be imploded early tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

Most likely the “main event” will come Wednesday when the spans over the water will be imploded and it is expected MoDOT officials will make an announcement sometime today.

The $14½ million refurbishment project will utilize the existing bridge pylons, but otherwise the entire bridge superstructure will be replaced and ultimately it will take on an appearance similar to the Boonslick Bridge at Boonville. The roadway will be appreciably wider with no overhead restrictions.

The Glasgow bridge was closed Aug. 4 and construction is expected to take from 12 to 15 months.

Local street change honors Earl Turner Sr.

SINGING AT HIS HOME at 200 Sycamore St. — soon to be Turner Drive — Earl Turner Sr. demonstrates his melodious voice Thursday morning.

“You need to do something good for someone everyday,” Earl Turner Sr.’s great-grandmother, Molly Turner, used to tell him.

Turner has lived that admonition by giving freely of his talents, both mechanical and musical.

At the Fayette city council meeting Tuesday (see story elsewhere this page), a token of appreciation was returned to Earl Sr. The council voted to change the western-most block of Sycamore Street to Turner Drive in his honor. Turner lives on that block.

Falcons win opener 33-15

Wide receiver Ryan Sherman made it look easy Friday. The senior had four touchdowns on the night: two in the air and two on the ground. Above he scores his second of the night on a 23-yard reception from quarterback Dalton LeNoir.
The Fayette Falcons won their first game of the season 33-15 Friday night over Knox County at Central Methodist University’s Davis Field. The opening-night victory is the first in seven years for Fayette and a first for fourth-year head coach Billy Huthman.

“I’ve been waiting four years to win the first game and it finally happened,” Huthman said.

“It’s a great day to be a Falcon.”

In fact, the last time Fayette won its opener was in 2001 with a 25-6 win at Knox County.

The Falcons set the pace right from the start. On the first play from scrimmage, senior running back Ryan Sherman got loose on a 65-yard sprint to the endzone for the first score of the season.

“We wanted to get out and score quickly and get the momentum in our direction,” Sherman said. And that’s just what he did.

When Fayette and Knox County met during the CMU football camp in June, Sherman was not on the field. And Huthman didn’t show much at the preseason jamboree Aug. 23. “That’s one of the things we didn’t show in our jamboree. We never showed it at camp.”

Dykens, Eagles open season tonight at home

The Eagles have a new field, new locker rooms and a new weight room on the way. And they have a new coach this year as well. Head Coach Alan Dykens was brought in last December to replace outgoing coach Merle Masonholder and to fix a Central Methodist institution which has been broken for decades.

Masonholder resigned after the Eagles’ final game in 2007 after six seasons of trying turn the program around. He never broke .500 at Central but came as close as 5-6 in 2002.

Dykens brings with him more than a decade of winning experience in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Before becoming head coach here, he spent the last six years at rival Graceland University where he served as Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and linebackers coach for the Yellow Jackets.

Dykens brought with him a sense of optimism and enthusiasm to the position when he arrived in December. And he said he feels the same way after weeks of working with the team. “I still feel really good. The kids paid the price over the summer. They came back in shape. And we’ve had nothing but tremendous practices so far. The kids have been focused and really working hard.”

Now Dykens looks to turn his wealth of experience into victories on Davis Field. He inherits last season’s 2-8 squad with strength at several positions. Veteran quarterback Brock Brockmeier is back as a senior. He will make the start today in the home opener against Graceland.

Lady Falcons look sharp in opener

A collision at the plate with the Brunswick pitcher ends in a safe call for Fayette junior CJ Roberts Tuesday. The run put Fayette up by two in the fourth inning.
The Fayette Lady Falcons came away with a strong 5-3 win at Brunswick in Tuesday’s season opener but fell 10-4 Thursday at Sturgeon.

Originally set to open play Monday at home, the game was canceled as Bunceton will not field a team this year.
“It was probably one of the better first games that we’ve played,” said Fayette Head Coach Georgia Varner. “Usually we’re a little more jittery.”

Senior starting pitcher Sam Jacobson picked up the win. She allowed one earned run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings pitched. “Sam had a great game,” said Varner. “She pitched a really good game and a smart game.”

Certainly much of the credit goes to cleanup hitter Georgia Jent. The senior finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

The right-handed Jent grounded out her first time up, but delivered two triples the opposite way down the right-field line in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
