2020-21 Glasgow Yellowjackets turn to basics

With only one big man, Glasgow head coach Mick Cropp realizes what every good coach does: going back to basic fundamentals will be their strongpoint. Losing two seniors from a team that went 13-12 could be a cause for concern for Cropp as he heads into 2020-21without Cole Fuemmeler and Deshonne Cowans.

“Fuemmeller was the first player off the bench last year and Deshonne was the heart of our team, a super athletic guy who played incredibly hard and the guys kind of played off him,” Cropp said.

Looking to bridge the gap for Glasgow will be several players that are not necessarily newcomers, but are new to getting a lot of varsity minutes.

“Senior Tavareon Patrick played a little last year and also sat on the bench. This year, however, he’s getting some time. He’s a pretty good player but just has not  seen a lots of organized basketball at this point. I think he’ll only get better as the year moves on,” said Cropp. “ Juniors Kelly Shields and Zane Johanning are also a couple of kids that haven’t gotten a lot of varsity minutes that will get some playing time this year.”

Junior Drew Sanders will return from last year as the reigning leading scorer for Glasgow.

“(Drew) Sanders is a really good shooter and a smart player that plays really good defense,” Cropp said, “while Senior Trevor Sanders can guard little guys or big guys and takes the ball to the hole pretty well.”

While both Drew and Trevor Sanders along with Tavareon look to be in the starting lineup they will be joined by junior Jaquan Cowans and sophomore point guard Edris Hamilton.

“Cowans is a post player, that that has really come a long way and I really think he has just scratched the surface of what his potential is,” Cropp said.

Edris Hamilton is a sophomore point guard that didn’t play a lot last year. He’s a really good passer that can make open shots. We’re working with him to be the floor general out there, the point guard to get guys in the right place and play good defense.”

Coach Cropp called senior Carson Frevert is the “prototypical Swiss army knife.”

“He can do a little bit of everything and is the type of player that has a good knack for where the ball is. He’s always in the right place at the right time and is a really a nice player for us to have coming off the bench,” said Cropp.

Size will be an obstacle for the Yellowjackets this year. “We’re not real big outside of Jaquan,  so on games where he is not as available, due to fouls or whatever, we’re going to have to be a team where we just do kind of the basics right now…not turn the ball over, get good shots, run our offense, play good defense and rebound. So really, we’re not necessarily a run-and-shoot type team, we will take transition baskets if they come to us,” Cropp said. “We’re not going  to be able to slow the ball down and take the air out of the ball and take 45 seconds to a minute to run out every possession, but we’ll need to be patient at times. We just really don’t have a specific style right now, just trying to be as fundamental as possible.

“I’m sure we’ll be better at the end of season than the beginning,” Cropp explained. “There are a lot of good basketball teams around here and  outside of Cowans, we lack a lot of size and there are a lot of big basketball teams around here so we are really going to have our work cut out for us on some nights.”

After being unable to compete in their own tournament due to player quarantines, the Yellowjackets have lost three in a row bringing their record to 0-4 on the year.
