Central baseball garnered three NAIA All-Americans for the 2021 season. Senior Sergio Macias landed first team honors after leading Central in average, hits, doubles, and RBIs. Macias was also named Heart Player of the Year and an Heart first team All-Conference selection. In addition, the American Baseball Coaches Association honored him as an ABCA All-American.
Junior Nick Merkel was named the 2021 Heart Pitcher of the Year in addition to being an NAIA All-American. He was also named to the AVISTA NAIA World Series All- Tournament team.
Senior Mason Schwellenbach rounded out the trio of All-Americans as he earned Honorable Mention for the second time in his career. Posting a 14-5 record in 15 starts, he threw a total of 87.2 innings and struck out 113 batters while sporting a 2.26 earned run average. On the offensive side, Schwellenbach batted .377 with 66 hits including 12 doubles, one triple and 12 home runs. He earned first team All-conference honors as both a pitcher and utility player.
Teams consisting primarily of high school players from Fayette High School and Harrisburg High School met in St. Louis at Busch Stadium on Father’s Day.
In a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the two teams faced off against each other. In the end, Harrisburg won the game 17-5. For Fayette, sophomore Haden Kelly had a double and a triple while Payton Oeth also garnered a double to go along with a single.
Harrisburg’s Logan Fritts went two-for-three with a double while Bryce Ott and Austin Starbuck each went two-for-two.
