Aldermen approve purchase of new Fayette police truck

The Fayette City Council gave unanimous approval to allow Chief of Police Jeff Oswald to purchase a new police truck.

Mr. Oswald presented to the council a pair of bids to replace the department’s 2013 Dodge Charger police car with a new truck. He explained that the rough roads in Fayette, along with those at DC Rogers Lake, which the city owns and Fayette police patrol, call for a pickup truck rather than a sedan. The Charger, which is nearing 57,000 miles, has already had extensive engine work performed. He said the department usually replaces cars when they turn over 50,000 to 60,000 miles in order to keep maintenance costs down.

Chief Oswald recommended the bid from Don Brown Chevrolet in St. Louis for a 2020 Chevrolet 4x4 pickup, which after outfitted with police equipment, will cost $24,920. The department currently has $50,000 in a sinking fund, which is topped out. “All we have to do is install our radio and it is ready to go,” said Mr. Oswald.

The other bid was from Lou Fusz a dealer in O’Fallon, Mo., for a 2021 Dodge 4x4 pickup for $35,156.22, including police equipment.

Chief Oswald suggested the city surplus the outgoing Charger, rather than trade it in toward the new truck. “I think we did about $3,000 or $4,000 better on the last Charger we sold outright,” he said. “I’m hoping we can see $9,000 or $10,000 out of it.”
