Alderwoman encourages Smart911 signups

Not many people have signed up for the city’s free alert system. Southwest Ward Alderwoman Bekki Galloway reported at the city council’s most recent meeting on Tuesday, March 14, that fewer than 200 are signed up for the system, which the city uses to send alerts regarding boil orders, road closures, electrical disturbances, and other emergencies via text a, emails, or landline calls. The system has been active since August 2020.

Mrs. Galloway asked that the city include reminders about the system in future communications and on social media. An advertisement from the city appears on Page 3 of this newspaper.

To sign up, go online to smart911.com. The system is free, and an email address is not required. Those who need help signing up may ask city hall for assistance. Ann Schnell at the Howard County Public Library on South Main Street has been helping sign up those without computers or internet access.
