An old song by Earl Turner, Jr. is getting new life from a record company in Germany.
Turner, a Fayette native and longtime Las Vegas entertainer, said that about a year and a half ago he was asked by Tramp Records for permission to license the song called, “S’port City Rock,” that he wrote for a two-song 45 while living in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1979. Turner created the two-song 45 to prove that he could make a record. The B side was a song called “Sunshine.”
“I don’t know how many people actually heard the song and I rarely performed it live. I was totally happy to have accomplished the goal I had set for myself,” Turner wrote on a Facebook post. “I wrote, produced, sang lead vocals, played various instruments and paid for two songs in 1979. I promoted it regionally almost literally on foot.”
The new CD/vinyl compilation is called “Can You Feel it, Volume 3 - Modern Soul, Disco, & Boogie 1976 to 1985.” And a photograph of Turner from 1979 graces the cover.
“The producer mentioned really liking my material, especially the photo and wanting to use it in the album,” Turner wrote. “So you can imagine my surprise (when) I received copies of the finished project! I had no idea he would use my picture as the cover photo for the project! Talk about speechless!”
According to the description, the album is “a smoking set of 17 groovers” that include “Can You Dig It” by Teakwood, “Bay Trippin” by Parnassus, “Come Along With Me & Party” by Monofide, “I Wanna Dance” by Compton Hodge, “Feel In” by The Unit III, “My Woman My Woman” by Joshua Jackson, “She's The One” by Nature, “Bronco Queen” by Van Buren, and “Sport City Rock” by Earl Turner. Turner, dubbed “The Ultimate Showman,” is scheduled to return to the stage on October 27 at Myron’s Jazz Cabaret at the Smith Center in Las Vegas. His show is called “A Brand New Me.”
