On Saturday, February 19, boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from the five high schools regularly covered by the Advertiser (Fayette, Glasgow, Harrisburg, Higbee and New Franklin) were all looking at the brackets for their respective districts with high hopes. With the exception of Higbee, which competes in Class 1, the teams would be competing for the Class 2, District 7 titles in New Franklin. Higbee would compete in Pilot Grove.

With two No. 1 seeds (Harrisburg and Higbee girls) and two No. 2 seeds (Harrisburg and Higbee Boys) along with one No. 3 seed (New Franklin girls), hopes were high that at least one area team would bring home a district championship.

By the end of the opening rounds of both tournaments, four of the 10 teams (Fayette boys, Fayette girls, New Franklin boys, and Glasgow boys) had been eliminated. After the semifinals, the Harrisburg girls, New Franklin girls, and Higbee girls had been added to that list. Friday night’s boy’s final in Pilot Grove claimed the Higbee boys. Saturday’s finals in New Franklin finished off the area teams with the Glasgow girls and the Harrisburg boys both falling to Salisbury.
