Annual Relay celebrates life after cancer

Nearly 30 area cancer survivors and caregivers, at right, celebrate victory over the disease by participating in the seventh annual 2006 Howard County Relay for Life Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The group kicked off the event by taking the first lap around the square and releasing balloons.

One in every three people will be impacted by the disease. To remember those that have died with cancer or who have sufffered from the disease, luminaries were purchased for $5 each and placed around the square.

More than 150 walkers and a dozen teams took place in the event whch raised more than $32,000.

Participants walked around the square from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

Fun-filled activities took place all night including: a 'Queen of the Relay' crowning, lip-sync contest, frozen tee-shirt competition, musical chairs, scavenger hunt and an egg race.

Relay for Life is described as the nation's largest fund-raising event.
