May pulse ‘unlikely’ to happen

With high river flows on the lower portion of the Missouri River and forecasts for more of the same, it is unlikely that the “May Pulse” will be conducted this year.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers announced the prediction Wednesday.

A pulse of water from Gavins Point Dam (at the Nebraska and South Dakota border) to benefit the endangered pallid sturgeon was scheduled during the period between May 1 and 19.

“There is plenty of water in the reservoirs to conduct the pulse, but the combination of high downstream flows on the James River and other tributaries, early nesting by the plovers, and low water temperatures makes a pulse this month unlikely,” said Jody Farhat, Chief of the Water Management Office in Omaha.

The pulse in March was cancelled because downstream flow limits were exceeded.
