Benefit for Santa Fe Trail Memorial Marker

A benefit concert for the Santa Fe Trail Memorial Marker in New Franklin will be held at the Flamingo Ballroom at the Isle of Capri Ballroom in Boonville.

The Concert will be March 10 at 7 o'clock and will feature the band Sierra which Ashley Evans Simpson sings with.  Leslie Evans Lyons has agreed to sing on the night of the concert as well.  Both of the girls are sisters to Sara Evans and have done backup singing with her on tour and on her records.  

Tickets are $15 each and will be available at the Isle of Capri, Copies Etc., Jennings Meats, New Franklin City Hall, Snoddy’s, Family Shoe Store, Glenn’s Cafe/Hotel Frederick, Emmet’s, Exchange Bank, Boonville Chamber of Commerce, Market Street Floral Shop, New Franklin Senior Center or Never the Same.

Local students graduate, earn academic honor

Susan N. Clayton of Fayette earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg following the fall 2011 semester.

Shane Fletcher of Fayette was named to the dean’s list and sigma chi eta following the fall 2011 semester at Crowley Ridge College of Paragrould, Ark. To be named to the lists, Fletcher has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

College financial aid can be sought at BHS event

A “FAFSA Frenzy” will be held at the Boonville High School on Feb. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all area students considering college.

Students and their parents will have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with college financial aid advisors who will assist with completing the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Information from 2010 or 2011 tax returns may be used. Most people will be able to complete the FAFSA form in 30 minutes. Plus, students may enter a drawing to win one of eight $500 scholarships given state-wide. There will also be drawings for door prizes.

Recent arrests reported

Local law enforcement officials reported the following accident and arrests:

Following an investigation by the Fayette Police Department of an assault incident which occurred in November, a Howard County warrant for the arrest of Melinda Morris, 38, of Fayette, was issued.  Morris turned herself into the Howard County Jail on Thursday where she posted bond and was released.

Following an investigation by the Glasgow Police Department of a forgery incident, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Jean Cowans, 43, of Fayette. She was arrested and taken to the Howard County Jail Thursday where she remains as of press time.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Department reported a vehicle roll over which resulted in no injuries. The one-vehicle accident occurred Monday morning on Route EE near Union School. The accident is blamed on  icy roads.
