Fayette native promoted in health industry

Paula Just, daughter of Paul and Milly Haggard of Fayette, was recently promoted within Health First, a Florida-based health system that employs more than 7,500 people and operates four hospitals.

With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, Just has 27 years of experience in healthcare human resources and most recently served as Network Vice President of Human Resource Effectiveness at SSM Health Care Corporation  in St. Louis.

Just was born and raised in Fayette, graduated from Fayette High School and Central Methodist University.  

Her husband is also a CMU alumnus and one of her three children is currently attending CMU.

No injuries result from vehicle accident

No injuries resulted from a one vehicle accident that happened on Friday in New Franklin.

At about 9:30 p.m. Kathi Maddex, 47, of New Franklin, was traveling west in a 2002 Ford Taurus at the 600 block of West Broadway when she went off the right side of the road, overcorrected, went off the left side of the road and hit a tree. Both airbags in the car were discharged.

Maddex refused medical treatment for herself and a juvenile who was a passenger in the car. The car was towed from the scene.

Fayette police make arrests

The Fayette Police Department reported the following recent arrests:

An intoxicated man entered the wrong Fayette home Friday night and was initially considered a burglar. Fortunately, there were no crimes committed other than trespassing and visible intoxication of a minor.

At 11:50 p.m., Fayette police were called to an alleged burglary. Upon arrival, the police found the suspect detained by the homeowner.

After investigation, it was determined that the suspect, Cody Hassek, 19, of Harrisonville, did not intend to steal or do any harm. Hassek said he thought he was entering his friend’s house.  

The homeowner declined to press charges of trespassing. Hassek was charged with being a minor who is visibly intoxicated. He was taken to the Howard County Jail and released with a citation.

In the course of investigating the case involving Hassek, another person, Gavin Frevert of Fayette, was arrested Jan. 25 for providing alcohol to minors. He was given a summons and released.

Jessica Barney, 33, of Armstrong, was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Jan. 17. This is Barney’s fifth DWI charge. She was taken to the Howard County Jail where she remained until Monday when she was transferred to the custody of officials from the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Thomas Backues, 19, of Freeburg, Mo., was arrested Jan. 25 for driving while intoxicated. Police had observed Backues failing to drive on the right half of the roadway at about 11:20 p.m. on North Main Street when they stopped him. He was taken to the Howard County Jail and released with a summons.

Several people were arrested for peace disturbance and disorderly conduct at a party that was held at 1003 W. Spring St. at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 26. The investigation is ongoing.
