The final event of the calendar year at the Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art opens on Tuesday, December 3, with the annual Christmas sale and show. It runs through December 12 on the campus of Central Methodist University.
Each year during the holiday season, the Gallery opens its doors to the public for a sale of works donated specifically to be sold. This year’s sale includes a number of paintings, drawings, posters, and other pieces, as well as a special offering of prints by alumni artist Ellery Johnson ’56.
Johnson’s work has recently been featured in the Art from the Alumni exhibit at the Ashby-Hodge Gallery this fall, as well as a headlining show at the Gallery in early 2022. A Central alumnus known for creating in a wide variety of media, Johnson earned awards and exhibition throughout the continent during his lifetime and after his passing in 2017. Johnson’s work was heavily influenced by American history and culture, particularly that of Native Americans.
The other half of this annual event is the student art show, featuring the works of students in the fall semester drawing class taught by Tyler Pierson, who also serves as the gallery’s curator.
The show and sale will run from December 3-12, with the Gallery open from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Special tours and groups are welcome by contacting Pierson at (660) 248-6304 or tpierson@centralmethodist.edu.
The Gallery, recently featured in the prominent American Art Review magazine, is located on the first floor of Classic Hall on the Fayette campus.
