The New Franklin girls’ basketball team used a 15-0 run at the end of the first quarter to earn the consolation bracket championship of the Glasgow Tournament on Saturday over Glasgow, 64-32.
Junior guard Lily Chitwood scored early and often for the Lady Bulldogs, putting up 24 first-half points. New Franklin took a 33-13 lead at the half, featuring a pesky defense that didn’t allow many uncontested looks for the host Lady Jackets.
“Our energy and effort were awesome from the start. I was really proud of that,” said New Franklin coach Parker Gross.
The second half was much more competitive, with Glasgow junior guard Halle Fuemmeler scoring the first four points of the third quarter. New Franklin stayed consistent, winning the third period by seven points and the final by five points to claim the 64-32 victory.
“I told the girls at halftime that a great start doesn’t matter if you don’t continue to play well in the final two quarters, and we finished strong,” Gross said.
Chitwood led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 30 points, and freshman post Lydia Burnett added 11. “Lily had a great game, but some of that was due to how good our other players performed, whether that was finishing their own shots or kicking Lily the ball when she was open. It was definitely a team effort,” Coach Gross added.
Fuemmeler had 13 points for the Jackets, and sophomore Karah Graves had seven.
The win puts New Franklin at 4-1 on the young season. The Lady Bulldogs were to host Fayette on Tuesday evening after the Advertiser went to press. Glasgow’s record drops to 3-2 overall. The Lady Jackets host Westran on Thursday evening.
