Major plans are in place for a bevy of activities in and around Fayette this weekend.
Events kickoff Thursday with the start of the annual Juneteenth celebration. Starting at 5:30 p.m. there will be a free hotdog roast at Paige-Liberty Park, followed by a youth ball game and a bounce house. Juneteenth Jeopardy begins at 7 p.m. at the park.
This year marks Fayette’s 22nd-annual Juneteenth celebration and it will be a true return to form after two years of limited activities due to COVID-19. On Friday evening there will be gospel singing and youth games starting at 6:30 p.m. on the courthouse lawn.
Juneteenth kicks into high gear on Saturday with the parade around the square at 9 a.m. followed by the official opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. A full slate of events Saturday include a car show, Fayette Reads Together, an interactive drumming and percussion workshop, a bake sale, poster contest, cornhole tournament, games and crafts, a live auction, bingo, a fashion show and a motorcade. There will be a rededication of Paige-Liberty Park at 5 p.m. followed by fireworks there at dark.
The event concludes with a community worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday on the courthouse lawn.
Another major draw to the Fayette area is the annual Fayette Optimist Club Truck and Tractor Pull. This will mark the 50th anniversary of the popular event, which serves as a fundraiser for the club. Gates open at 2 p.m. and the events begins at 6:30 p.m.
