Boone County May Board Prisoners Here Sheriff Says

Needed kitchen appliances have been ordered and the new county jail may be ready to house prisoners in about two weeks, the sheriff said Tuesday.

Boone County has already expressed interest in boarding prisoners in the new $1.5 million facility here.

'The Boone County commissioners were here Friday for the regional meeting of county commissioners,' said Sheriff Charles Polson. 'The entire group toured the new jail. Since then, we have heard from Boone County jail administrators that they would like to board prisoners here.'

Boone County built its own new jail just a few years ago. But there is a chronic shortage of jail space, due to the continued population growth in Columbia.

In years past, the Howard County jail became a profit center for the sheriff's department. The county charged board for prisoners placed there by cities and other counties.

The practice declined as the old jail became more obsolete.

Now, the outlook is promising. The new jail can house up to eight women, as well as a larger number of male prisoners. The old jail had no facilities for women.

'We'll have to be competitive on the price,' Polson said. 'Cooper County charges $30 a day per prisoner. So does Chariton County. We'll probably wind up matching their price.'

Both Cooper and Chariton have relatively new county jails.

Polson said some kitchen equipment will be moved into the new jail, from the old jail next door. But the budget for the new facility includes funds for some needed additional items: Ovens and a freezer are among them.
