New Franklin dominated Madison at home on Monday 18-3 for the Bulldogs’ fourth win of the season.
After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Lane Hackman led off with a ground-ball double to left field. New Franklin then strung together singles by Brandon Phillips, Landon Shaw, Nolan McGowan, and another by Phillips to go along with six walks to take an eight-run lead after one inning.
“I liked our response after an uncharacteristic lack of communication in the first, which led to their two runs,” said New Franklin coach Erich Gerding. “We put some good swings on the ball.”
Three walks, a hit batsman, and a single by Cox led to two more New Franklin runs in the second.
Singles by Jonah Bishop, Noah Hackman, and Bishop, combined with four walks and an error allowed the Bulldogs to score six more runs in the third and put the game away after three.
Phillips picked up the win in his varsity debut on the mound. He allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk and struck out three batters in two innings.
“I was happy to see Brandon get a win in his first-ever varsity appearance on the bump,” Gerding said.
Freshman Ryder Hopkins struck out the side in a perfect top of the third.
The Bulldogs travel to Prairie Home today (Wednesday) before facing county rival Glasgow on the road on Thursday.
