Bulldogs earn road victory in Jamestown

The New Franklin boys scored a resounding 59-32 road win over the Jamestown Eagles Tuesday night.

The game looked to be a barnburner in the opening minutes with the first nine points scored via 3-pointers—two by Jamestown and one by Bulldog senior Tre Cowans. Following that outburst, the two teams settled into more conventional play as only six more 3-point shots were scored the entire night.

New Franklin had pulled ahead by one after the first quarter with the score 11-10. The Bulldogs added 18 in the second on the strength of sophomore Tanner Bishop’s eight points. The teams entered intermission with New Franklin up 29-22.

New Franklin’s defense showed up strong in the second half as the Eagles were held to six points in the third and only five in the fourth. While holding the Eagles down, the Bulldogs were able to add 12 in the third and 18 in the fourth to finish on top 59-32.

“It was good to start the final stretch of regular-season games with a win,” said New Franklin coach Ross Dobson.

Junior Clayton Wilmsmeyer again led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Bishop added 12. Sophomore Connor Wilmsmeyer put in nine. Senior Brett Boggs dropped in seven to go along with sophomores Drake Clark and Owen Curry with five apiece. Cowans and junior Owen Armentrout both finished with three.

Evan Schoenthal led Jamestown with 10 points.

New Franklin moves its record to 12-7 on the year. Weather caused the game set for Wednesday night against Northeast to be moved to February 12 and also, according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association website, caused cancellation of the Friday night tilt against Brunswick.

New Franklin’s next action is set for February 8 at home against Slater.

“This group worked together to get this victory and talked before the game about making the most of the last remaining games,” said Dobson. “We can do something special and it will have to be a collective effort on the offensive and defensive end to make an impact at the end of the season.”
