It took tournament host New Franklin four minutes to get on the scoreboard Monday and the Bulldogs trailed the eight-seed Community 12-11 after eight minutes. The first quarter back from winter break was one that the New Franklin boys would probably like to forget.
By the end of the second quarter, most everyone had.
New Franklin outscored the Trojans 25-0 over the next eight minutes on the way to a 63-22 opening-round win.
“When you hold a high school team to 10 points over three quarters, you’ve got to be pleased with that,” coach Ross Dowell said.
Tyler Perkins scored 13 of his 21 points during the second quarter run.
Gavin Bishop scored 10 points during a 19-0 second half run that put New Franklin ahead 57-17 and emptied the benches with a running clock.
“You can definitely tell there were cobwebs,” Dowell said about the slow start.
“We got used to playing against our second and third group and we’re throwing passes tonight that we can make against those guys, but we can’t make against another team.
“We got back into the groove in the second quarter and kind of pitched a shutout there, so you can’t complain about that too much.”
Bishop finished with 19 points. Jackson Dorson scored seven and Tysen Dowell had six.
