Bulldogs sweep Blair Oaks in opener

Harrisburg opened summer league play with a doubleheader sweep of the Blair Oaks junior varsity team.

Four Bulldog pitchers combined to allow just one hit over the two games: 9-2 and 7-0 wins for Harrisburg.

"We were all excited to be back on the diamond as a team again," Harrisburg coach Chris Ackman said.
"We play to win, but it wasn’t about wins and losses. For me, I missed being around the guys in the dugout. We had a lot of laughs in the dugouts."

The Falcons led briefly in the first game, taking a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a double after a two-out walk and an error. The Bulldogs came back in the third inning to tie the game on singles from Brayden Ott and Trevor Smoot.

Later in the inning, Anthony Alicea came through with the bases loaded, driving in two runs with a single. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Alicea finished the game 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Brayden Hudson had a triple and drove in a run. Dustin Gipson was 2-2. Gavin Curtis and Ott each finished 2-3.

"Offensively, we had multiple players with multiple hits,"Ackman said. "It was a good night for our offense."

Gipson allowed two unearned runs on a hit and three walks in two innings. Smoot walked two batters and struck out four over three innings.

"Our pitchers did a great job on opening night," Ackman said. "Gipson pitched a good two innings of work. His command was a little off, but he was able to get outs. Smoot came in relief to pitch three solid innings for us. He will pitch to contact, so our defense will have to be ready."

All of the Bulldog pitchers were kept on a pitch count of 30 to 45 for the first action of the season.

Alicea and Logan Fritts combined for the no-hit shutout in the nightcap. Alicea walked one batter and recorded all six outs by strikeout in the first two innings.

"(Alicea) has a lot of pop on his fastball," Ackman said. "He will compete with Smoot for the number one position on our staff. Fritts also came in for relief. He is another pitcher who pitches to contact."

Harrisburg had a great start to the second game offensively, taking a 2-0 lead before the first out was recorded. Alicea drew a walk to lead off, followed by singles from Ott, Smoot, and Wyatt Frost.

Smoot was 2-2 with two RBI. Joshua Cochran had a hit and drove in two runs.
