Bulldogs walk off with win in season finale

New Franklin wrapped up the fall baseball season with a dramatic 8-7 walk-off victory over Jamestown on Tuesday.

Trailing by one run, the Bulldogs got four straight baserunners to end the game before an out was made in the bottom of the seventh.

Sam Marshall looped a single to center field to score the tying run and Connor Wilmsmeyer came through with the walk-off hit.

It was the fifth victory in six games for New Franklin (7-4), and it was the Bulldogs’ seventh game of the season decided by two runs or less.

“Another nail biter… and another collective effort from everyone up and down the lineup,” New Franklin coach Erich Gerding said.

“I’m very proud of this team and what they accomplished this fall.”

Keaton Eads drew the leadoff walk and scored the tying run in the seventh.

Senior Colten Collyott walked twice and scored two runs, including the game-winner. It was the final Bulldog baseball game for Collyott, who will be graduating early.

“We are definitely going to miss Colten,” Gerding said. “He was a great center fielder for us for four years.”

New Franklin trailed 4-2 in the fifth when Wilmsmeyer cleared the bases with a three-run single to center field. Jake Marshall added a run with a sacrifice fly to put New Franklin ahead by two.

Jamestown took the lead with three runs on two walks and four hits in the top of the sixth, but Caleb Hull stranded three runners with an unassisted double play at third.

Wilsmeyer finished 2-4 with four RBI. Owen Armentrout was 2-3 with a walk and Sam Marshall was 2-3. Eads was 1-3 with a walk and scored two runs.

Clayton Wilmsmeyer was 1-3 with a walk and Tanner Bishop was 1-4 with two RBI.
