Central men and women take first at CMU Invite

The Central Methodist Outdoor Track & Field programs hosted the CMU Invite at Davis Field on Saturday. 

The CMU women won the team title with 193 total points. The men also placed first with 140 points. 

For the women, sophomore sprinter Kailey Johnson won the 100-meter dash with a personal best of 12.16 seconds. Freshman teammate Carter Hawkins finished fourth with a personal best of 12.72 seconds. In addition, Hawkins won the pole vault with a mark of 3.18 meters. Johnson also hit a new personal best in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.31 seconds, a new school record, and good enough to hit the ‘A’ standard qualification for the national meet.

Freshman Megan Aubuchon also hit the ‘A’ standard in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.34 seconds, a new personal best.

Sophomore Dayana Montenegro placed third in the 400-meter dash at 58.47 seconds.

The women’s 4x400m relay made up of Montenegro, junior Keiara-Ashley Cunningham, freshman Jessica Bailey, and Johnson broke the school record in 3:56.29, hitting the ‘B’ standard for the national meet. 

In the distance events, junior Katherine Bangert ran in the 5000-meter run, finishing second in a time of 20:40.65. The duo of sophomore Lilian Patterson and freshman Baleigh Morris finished first and second in the 5000-meter race walk with times of 30:55.81 and 30:58.50, respectively, both being new personal bests.

Junior Kaitlyn Weber hit the national qualifying ‘B’ standard in the long jump with a winning mark of 5.65 meters. Sophomore Kailey Johnson was right behind Weber in second place with a new personal best of 5.55 meters. Weber also won the triple jump with a final jump of 11.26 meters. Sophomore Sarah Johnson placed second in the event with a mark of 10.76 meters. 

In the heptathlon, the duo of freshman Renee Finke and junior Aquila Mucubaquire finished second and third. Finke finished the seven-event competition with 3,573 points while Mucubaquire compiled 3,382 points. 

On the men’s side, sophomore Brennan Moots placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.80 seconds, hitting the ‘B’ standard for the national meet. Senior Curtis Johns ran a season-best in the 200-meter dash at 22.10 seconds, good enough for third place. 

Senior Alexander Ayala bit the ‘B’ standard in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.45 seconds to finish second in the event. 

Freshman Ethan Smith won the decathlon with 6,001 total points, a national qualifying ‘B’ standard. Harrisburg native and reigning NAIA National Field Athlete of the Week Taylor Bottomley placed first in the shot put with a throw of 17.13 meters.

Fayette native and CMU freshman Josh Henderson finished second in the discus with a personal-best toss of 45.21 meters. Classmate Colder Evans placed fourth with a throw of 42.76 meters. 

The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Adam Trachsel, Johns, sophomore Jack Schiffhauer, and Ayala concluded the meet by earning first place in 3:22.18. 

Central will next compete in the Lincoln Open on Saturday, in Jefferson City.
