Chill out at the Freeze Off this Saturday

Posted
Final preparations are under way for the ninth annual Great Fayette Freeze Off which happens Saturday morning and afternoon in and around the historic Howard County Courthouse.

Much of the activity will focus around the bandstand.

Over the years the event has become a much-anticipated Fayette tradition. As in past years, Dawn Huckins serves as overall coordinator.

The festival is classic small-town, Americana and is described by planners as 'family friendly.' Along with the serving of ice cream and cake, there will be booths featuring hamburgers and hot dogs, in addition to funnel cakes and other refreshments.

Various not-for-profit groups will have booths and displays set up.

Activities and entertainment for children will take place throughout the day.

The courthouse square, as in past years, will ring with musical entertainment including gospel, big band, pioneer, honky-tonk, and old-time fiddlers, in addition to the ever-popular Columbia Community Band.

Here's How to Enter
Entries in the homemade ice cream competition, the homemade cake competition and the art show must be registered no later than 9:45 a.m. The registration booth will be set up on the southwest corner of the courthouse lawn.

Ice cream must be cured and frozen the night before; no raw eggs or non-pasteurized dairy products.

Categories include:
' Classic (vanilla and chocolate);
' Fruit (any pure fruit recipe - no additional ingredients such as graham crackers, cream cheese, nuts, etc.)
' Exotic (anything not covered in the first two categories).

In addition to ribbons for first, second and third places and Best of Show, there will be nearly $1,000 in cash prizes awarded.

Well-known KOMU-TV personalities Paul Pepper and James Mouser again will be judges for the ice cream contest.
(Mouser also is the staff cartoonist for the Fayette newspapers.) Also judging will be KOMU-TV weatherman Eric Aldridge, and John Bassford, KMIZ-TV evening news anchor.

Cake entries must be on disposable plates or on plates that one does not expect to have returned. Entries should be covered with either a cake lid or clear wrap that does not touch the icing. Cakes are judged on appearance and taste.

Questions' Phone Dawn Huckin sat 248-3371 or e-mail her at heavener@socket.net.

The Freeze Off is sponsored by Fayette Main Street and the Fayette Chamber of Commerce.

Art Show in Courthouse
As part of the Freeze Off Saturday, there again will be an art show in the hallways of the courthouse.
Artists, amateur and professional, are invited to enter their work.

'The show gets better each year,' says coordinator Jim Steele, editor of the Fayette newspapers and Chamber of Commerce president. 'We'll offer some nice cash prizes as well as ribbons to the top winners in each of four entry fields for both professional and amateur artists.'

The five entry fields include:
' Acrylic or oil paintings;
' Watercolors;
' Photography;
' Pencil and;
' Pen and ink.

First place winners in each professional field will receive a $100 award. The first place winner in each amateur field will receive $50.

Ribbons also will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each field.

The public will vote on a favorite in the show for the 'People's Choice' award. This winner will receive $100 and a ribbon.

The entry fee is $10 for each piece and a limit of three works per artist.

Any professional or amateur who would like to enter the show should call the newspaper office at 248-2235 for information and an official form.

Two professional artists will serve as judges.

Art show entry forms and information may be secured at the Fayette newspaper office at 203 N. Main St., or at the information desk of the Commercial Trust Co., or by calling 660/248-2235.
