A bridge on Spring Street next to Daly Elementary school is closed until further notice. Erosion discovered near a new sewer pipe has compromised the integrity of the bridge.
“It’s awful,” said Danny Dougherty, the city’s director of public works. “The foundation is gone. The footing is gone.”
Dougherty told the city council at its most recent meeting on Tuesday, April 26 that the erosion was discovered by a passerby who alerted the city.
Dougherty explained that he had spoken with Scott Vogler from MECO Engineering, the engineering firm retained by the city, about bringing in a structural engineer to inspect the bridge.
Council members gave unanimous approval to hire a structural engineer and to pursue any and all grants to help pay for the project.
Dougherty said the bridge will remain closed and students who often cross the bridge when walking to and from school will be re-routed through the softball field.
“My worry was that a trash truck would come across there and it would give completely away,” Dougherty told the council.
