City Pool closes for summer due to bad pump motor

The Fayette City Pool is closed for the summer because of a faulty pump motor.

Danny Dougherty, the city’s director of public works, said Monday that the pump motor, which was new when installed this spring, began causing problems when the pool opened on Memorial Day. The company that supplied the motor is sending a new pump, which is expected to arrive this week. But once it’s installed and the pool is refilled, there won’t be much of the season left. The last day the pool was planned to be open was August 18.

Once the new motor is installed, the company from which it was originally purchased will pay to have the faulty one repaired. The city will use it as a backup motor.

The closure comes at a time of low attendance. The number of swimmers typically drops during the last week of July and the first week of August as families take vacations and young athletes begin preparing for fall sports seasons. Dougherty said that it appears that attendance is down this year compared to recent years but won’t know for sure until end-of-season numbers are reported.
