The City of Fayette must appoint a new City Marshall, more commonly known as Chief of Police. Jeff Oswald, the city’s current Police Chief, was elected Sheriff in the Nov. 3 general election. He will be sworn in on Dec. 31.

The Fayette City Council was scheduled to appoint am interim City Marshall at its regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 17, after this newspaper had already gone to press. The interim Marshall will serve until April when voters will elect a new Police Chief for one year to finish out Sheriff-elect Oswald’s term. In April of 2022, voters will vote into office a City Marshall who will then serve out a full four-year term.

Fayette is one of the few cities left in Missouri to still elect a City Marshall.

The council was also tasked with appointing a new East Ward Alderman. Jeremy Dawson, who was elected after a successful write-in campaign during the postponed municipal election that was eventually held in June. Mr. Dawson recently moved to a new residence. He now lives in the Northwest Ward.

Dawson’s last meeting was Tuesday, Nov. 3. He told this newspaper that he does intend to run for the city council seat in the Northwest Ward. That election will take place in April, 2021.

The current Northwest Ward Alderman is Pat Roll, who was appointed in August. He took over for Larry Dimond who resigned to health issues.

Mr. Roll said on Monday that he will not run to maintain the seat.
