Clark Middle School wrapped up the softball season with a sweep of California on October 8 to finish with 21 victories.

“I am extremely proud of this team’s performance this year, as we went 21-4 and won the conference championship,” coach Charlie Trick said.

Skylar Sunderland struck out 11 batters during a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 win in the first game. The game was scoreless entering the final inning. Whitley Sunderland and Melissa Innes led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Mariah Felten had the game-winning hit to left field.

Skylar Sunderland finished the season with an earned run average of 1.83 and delivered128 strikeouts. Payton Kindle had an ERA of 3.31 and a perfect record of 10-0.

“Our pitching staff dominated by posting an ERA of 2.34 and a 131-39 strike-to-walk ratio,” Trick said.

“Our defense showed tremendous improvement throughout the duration of the season, and brought us some close, late-season wins.”

Kindle earned her tenth win during the Falcons’ final game of the season. She gave up one earned run on three hits and three walks in a 10-3 victory.

Skylar Sunderland hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to put Fayette ahead 6-3 in the second. The Falcons scored nine runs in the inning. Sunderland finished with four RBI for the game and led the Falcons with a batting average of .466 and 32 RBI for the season.

Leah Thies drew 22 walks in 25 games and led CMS with an on-base-percentage of .571. Browyn Eubanks hit .433, led the Falcons with nine steals, and scored a team-high 42 runs.

Cayle John led CMS with four home runs. She had 12 extra-base hits and drove in 24 runs.

“Our offense combined the ability to hit for average and power, while also grinding out at bats and doing the little things like getting bunts down and drawing walks,” Trick said. “This led to us averaging almost nine runs per game.”

Kindle had 21 hits and 14 walks, while Whitley Sunderland had 12 hits and 11 walks.

Felten finished with 11 hits and 11 walks in just 16 games.
