CMU men’s basketball hangs on for two wins at Springfield tourney

Arkansas Baptist - 56 

Behind three double-digit scoring performances, the Central Methodist men’s basketball program opened the Show Me Global Logistics Classic with a convincing 76-56 victory over Arkansas Baptist College Friday night in Springfield, Missouri. 

With the win, Central improves to 4-0 overall while the Buffaloes fall to 1-6. 

The Eagles were extremely efficient in the first half, outscoring Arkansas Baptist 40-22. The Buffalos matched CMU’s offensive output in the second, scoring 34 points compared to 36 for the Eagles. 

However, Central’s strong opening half propelled them to a 20-point victory. 

Sophomore Jonathan Brown led the CMU offense with 23 points, in addition to six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Senior Tim Cameron also reached double-figures with 15 points and nine rebounds, nearly earning a double-double. In addition, Cameron tallied three steals and a block. 

Freshman Charlie Bronakowski, a Boonville native, was the final Eagle to reach double-digit scoring, as he recorded 11 points in only 12 minutes of action. Sophomore Isaiah May also had a productive evening, collecting eight points and grabbing eight rebounds. 

The Eagles won the battle of the boards with 48 rebounds compared to 29 for Arkansas Baptist.  Graduate Fode Camara and Cameron led the way with nine boards each. 

Central’s defense held the Buffaloes to 23.8% shooting from beyond the arc, and forced 19 turnovers on eight steals.

CMU - 84

College of the Ozarks - 70

The Central men concluded the Show Me Global Logistics Classic with an 84-70 victory over College of the Ozarks Saturday night. 

Central improves its overall record to 5-0 while the Bobcats fall to 2-6. 

The Eagles held a slim 41-39 lead at halftime, before outscoring College of the Ozarks 43-31 in the second to earn a 14-point victory. 

Sophomore Jonathan Brown led the offense, pouring in a career-high 26 points on 60% shooting from the field. Senior Tim Cameron followed with 14 points while sophomore Isaiah May tallied 13 points. Graduate  Fode Camara was the final Eagle to land in double figures, scoring 10 points.

The Eagles shot 49.2% from the field including 47.4% from beyond the arc. May led the sharpshooters with three 3-point baskets. Central was also extremely efficient from the charity stripe, converting on 81.3% of its free-throw attempts. 

CMU won the battle of the boards, grabbing 34 rebounds compared to just 16 for the Bobcats. 

The Eagles’ defense finished the evening with eight steals and four blocks. Cameron led the way with four steals and two blocks.

The Eagles will host Columbia College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Puckett Field House.
