Spring and summer graduates at Central Methodist University have the chance to come back to campus in September and finally experience their graduation ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 13.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CMU’s classes were online after Spring Break, and the May graduation ceremony was postponed.

CMU’s provost, Dr. Rita Gulstad, said the ceremony will be outdoors at Davis Field. The ceremony will honor graduates and award recipients.

“We’re thrilled that our graduates will be able to walk across the stage,” said Gulstad, who emphasized that this ceremony is also for graduates from CMU’s extended locations whose ceremonies there were also cancelled.

Participants must register at  https://www.cmueaglestore.com/store/c105/Graduation_.html.

Graduates will be allowed up to four guests. Gulstad said social distancing will be followed, as well as other safety measures.

A rain date is scheduled for September 20.

Central Methodist University has opted to transition all classes to online following the Thanksgiving break for the upcoming fall semester. The decision follows a growing trend for universities and college in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In-person classes begin August 18 at CMU. Classes will be in session on Labor Day and the university will forgo its usual fall break. Students depart for Thanksgiving recess on Saturday, November 21, returning to class remotely on Monday, November 30. Final exams will be handled remotely December 7-11.

CMU President Roger Drake said the decision to modify the semester’s academic calendar was made to minimize the possible spread of COVID-19 upon returning to campus after Thanksgiving break.

“We’re very fortunate to be able to make such a move with ease thanks to Digital U,” Drake said. “Our students are in the Digital U environment the entire semester, so it’s a move to which they are accustomed.”

For those not able to leave campus, residence halls will remain open over the Thanksgiving break and through December 11.
