CMU softball takes five

The Eagle softball team won five out of six games at the Gulf Shores Invitational over the past weekend.

Hannah Criswell hit a grand slam in the final game of the Invitational, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead in the second inning of a 11- 1 win over Faulkner. The Eagles have won nine out of their last ten games and have a record of 9-5. CMU was 35th in the voting when the most recent coaches’ poll was released.

Central Methodist’s eight game winning streak was snapped on Sunday morning with a 7-2 loss to No. 23 Houston-Victoria.

The Eagles outhit the Jaguars 8-7 for the game, but Houston-Victoria had a two-out bases-clearing double in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.

On Saturday, The Eagles took a 9-0 lead in the fifth inning on the way to a 13-6 win over Brenau. Katelyn Kiser and Lexi Jones each had three hits in the win. Kelli Gorman was 2-2 at the plate with three walks and three runs driven in.

CMU put up five runs in the first two innings of a 6-2 win over Williams Baptist in Saturday’s second game. Kiser was 3-4 at the plate with two RBI in the win. Keighlan Cronin gave up two runs on four hits and a walk. 

On Friday, Gorman’s grand slam lifted Central Methodist to a 9-5 win over Freed-Hardeman in the second game.

The Eagles fell behind 5-0 in the middle of the second inning, but Morgan Willis and Kiser singled with the bases loaded to tie the game in the third. Then Gorman hit the ball over the fence, scoring the final runs of the game.

Madison Love drove in the go-ahead run in the third inning of CMU’s 5-2 win over LSU-Alexandria in the first game of the weekend. Jones had the game-tying single in the third. Love also drove in the first run of the day with a double in the second inning. Cronin allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk over seven innings in the circle.
