CMU splits four-game series with Park

Posted

CMU baseball fell 2-0 to Park on Friday before coming back to take the second game 8-4. On Saturday both teams brought their big bats with CMU losing the first game 12-11 before winning the second 15-8

In Game 1 on Friday, senior Nick Merkel was collared with the loss despite only giving up five hits and striking out six in six innings of work.

CMU bats could only scratch out singles by sophomore Bobby Nichols, junior Robbie Merced, and junior Cole Luedeking.

The Eagles seemed a bit more like themselves in the second game on Friday as they pushed across eight runs with 11 hits including three doubles and a home run.

Nichols, Luedeking, senior Jeff Vance, and junior Logan McDonald each belted out two hits apiece with McDonald and Vance each lacing doubles.

Senior Grant belted a home run and sophomore Khalil Thrasher hit a double to go along with a single by Merced.

Senior Beau Atkins went the distance and got the win for Central, pushing his season record to 7-0. Atkins struck out 11 and gave up only four hits.

On Saturday, the Eagles racked up 19 hits against Park and still fell short in the 12-11 loss to the Pirates.

Sophomore Sebastian Escobar took the hill to start the game and gave up three hits and two runs in four innings of work. Escobar gave way to junior Tyler Vicars who gave up 11 hits and nine runs before giving up the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. With the loss, Vicars moves his record to 5-1.

Cole Luedeking paced the Eagle offense with four singles, followed by Bobby Nichols with three. Freshman Tanner Sears had a double and two singles. Robbie Merced, Jeff Vance, and Khalil Thrasher each added a double and a single. Sophomore Tommy Giarola,  senior Grant Victor, and Logan McDonald each contributed a single.

CMU led 11-7 going into the bottom of the seventh when Park was able to string together a double, an error, and three singles with two outs to earn the walk-off victory 12-11.

Surely stinging from the come-from-behind manner in which they lost the first game on Saturday, the Eagles came out swinging in the second game, grabbing an 8-2 lead by the middle of the fourth inning. Park fought back in its half of the fourth with three runs but Central was not to be denied this time around. The Eagles added two more runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Park answered weakly with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles held on for the 15-8 victory.

Junior Nino Puckett was the recipient of the Eagle offense and took the win. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits and struck out five in five innings of work.

Tommy Giarola went two-for-four with a home run and two RBIs, while Luedeking and Thrasher each went three-for-four with two RBIs.

Bobby Nichols, Robbie Merced, and Logan McDonald each contributed a single and a double while Tanner Sears singled twice. Sophomore Josh Green rounded out the CMU hits with a single.

CMU returns to action on Friday as the Eagles head to Atchison, Kansas to take on Benedictine with doubleheaders set for Friday and Saturday.
