CMU women advance to Finals

The No. 1 seeded Central Methodist women’s soccer program opened national tournament play with an 8-0 route of No. 4 seeded Bellevue (Nebraska) Saturday afternoon in Columbia.

The Eagles earned their 20th win of the season, marking the third-straight year Central has tallied at least 20 wins. Bellevue ends the year with an 8-11 overall record. 

Central scored six goals in the span of 16 minutes in the first half, highlighted by a hat trick from freshman Marcella Helena. Classmate Roneisha Frank scored the opening goal of the match in the 12th minute, followed by a pair of goals from senior Andrea Villar and three goals from Helena. 

Freshman Grace Faherty scored her second goal in as many games just before halftime to push the lead to 7-0 at the break.

Sophomore Sandra Jakobsen put the finishing touches on the victory with a goal in the 61st minute. Central wrapped up the afternoon with 34 total shots including 13 on goal, compared to only one shot for Tabor. 

Villar led the offense with seven shots, including two on goal. The Madrid, Spain native now has 27 goals in 20 matches this season, good enough for No. 4 all-time for single-season goals in school history. She also dished out two assists in the victory.

Helena added five total shots, including three on goal, and three scores. It marks the freshman’s fifth multi-goal game of the year and her first career hat trick. 

Helena, freshman Kaia Randklev, and sophomore Celine Witt each recorded an assist.

Columbia College - 0

Central Methodist shut out Columbia College, 2-0, in the Opening Round Championship match of the Columbia Bracket Saturday night in Columbia. 

With the win, CMU improves its overall record to 21-1 and advances to the Final Site for the third-straight season. The Cougars see their season come to an end with an overall record of 18-4. 

Central’s first goal of the match came in the 21st minute from senior striker Andrea Villar, who was assisted by freshman Roneisha Frank. 

The Eagles would take a 1-0 lead into halftime, as the defense held the Cougars to only two first-half shots. 

Freshman Marcella Helena sealed the victory for the Eagles in the 84th minute, as she scored on a free ball inside the box. Central would go on to earn the 2-0 win. 

CMU finished the evening with 26 total shots including 11 on goal. Helena led the offense with seven shots taken, and four on goal. Frank tallied five total shots while Villar and sophomore Sandra Jakobsen recorded four each. 

Central’s defense held Columbia College without a shot attempt in the second half and recorded its 18th shut-out of the season. 

The Eagles have earned the No. 4 seed at the Final Site and will face No. 5 seeded Keiser (Fla.) in the national quarterfinals at 10 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Alabama.
