A Columbia teenager is dead following an early morning crash on Highway 40 in southern Howard County on Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Trey G. Potter, 17, was eastbound on Highway 40 near where it intersects with the MKT Trail. The 2004 Toyota Matrix exited the right side of the roadway and struck a traffic post and concrete barrier.

Potter was pronounced dead on the scene by Howard County Coroner Frank Flaspohler at 2:45 a.m.

Potter was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the patrol.

The crash marks Troop F’s first fatality of October and the 61st for the year.
