Commission bids farewell to outgoing county officials

Posted

Friends and colleagues bid farewell to four Howard County officials in a ceremony Tuesday morning in the courthouse. Sheriff Mike Neal and Coroner Frank Flaspohler were each defeated in their bids for re-election in November. Eastern District Commissioner Richard “Dragon” Conrow and Western District Commissioner Howard McMillan are both retiring from their offices.

Howard County Presiding Commissioner Jerimiah Johnmeyer presented each with a plaque commemorating their tenures in the service of the county.

Conrow and McMillan leave office after 16 and 11 years on the county commission. “It has been a fun ride. Tough, but fun,” Conrow said in an emotional speech to attendees. “I enjoyed my time here with everyone. You have a good corps coming in.”

McMillan thanked those in attendance. “The old man is leaving the building,” he said.

Neal said he was going to miss the people with whom he worked as well as the job. He served more than 26 years in the department, the last eight of which as Sheriff.

Flaspohler had the longest public career of the four men. He leaves office after 28 years of service as Howard County Coroner.

Newly elected officials were sworn into office on Dec. 31. Their terms officially began on Jan. 1.
