Fayette's downtown square may be a bit more user-friendly with the approval of two measures recommended by the police department and city officials.

For many years, U-turns on the square have been a no-no. Now they will be permitted as long as a motorist does so carefully.

Chief of Police Bryan Kunze told the city council Tuesday evening that the prohibition had not been enforced vigorously in recent years, owing mainly to the fact that cars today tend to be smaller and thus have a tighter turning radius. In addition, removing the No U-Turn signs will complement the overall effort to beautify the square, Kunze said.

The chief also recommended that stop-signs at Morrison and Main be modified. Heretofore, northbound traffic on Main was required to stop, as was eastbound traffic on Morrison, which Kunze said was illogical. This will be changed. The Davis-Main intersection will remain 'as is' with Main traffic stopping in both directions and Davis having the right-of-way both directions.

It was also noted at the meeting that the flashing right light at Church and Morrison has been removed in favor of a simple stop sign.

Street Department Supervisor Eddie Innes Jr. said that the new retro-look high-pressure sodium lights, which already are lighted on the outside of the square, will be turned on within a week or so on the interior of the square (adjacent to the courthouse), with the ultimate removal of all overhead wires.

In a related matter, Innes told the Democrat-Leader that all the new street signs around the city now have been installed. Within a few weeks, the city will tag the old signs which were removed and present them to individuals who sponsored
