The unemployment rate in Howard County dropped to 2.1% through November 2021, the second-lowest rate in the past five years, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The figure was up slightly from October’s rate of 2.0%, which is the lowest since the start of the pandemic.
Unemployment here has been in a steady decline since setting a five-year high of 6.8% in April 2020. The rate was as high as 8.3 % in January 2013.
These figures are lower when compared to state and national rates. Missouri recorded an unemployment rate of 3.5% through November 2021, with a high of 12.5% in April 2020. The national unemployment rate through November 2021 was 3.9%.
Pemiscot County in the far southeast portion of Missouri is experiencing the highest unemployment in the state with a rate of 4.2%. Holt County in northwest Missouri currently holds the state’s lowest rate of 1.6%.
