Countywide Rave Alert goes into effect next month

Posted

A new alert system for Howard County is set to go online in mid-August. Howard County Emergency Management has contracted with Rave Alert, a mass notification system, that can send immediate notifications to mobile phones, email accounts, and landline telephones.

The alerts may be received via text message, email, or mobile or landline telephone audio. Users can sign up immediately at www.smart911.com.

Alerts include weather warnings (such as tornados and floods), emergency notifications from law enforcement or other government entities, and general notifications for boil orders, power outages, and other similar alerts.

Bryan Kunze, from Howard County Emergency Management, said that all landlines in the county have been plugged into the service to receive spoken audio alerts. Those wishing to receive text messages or emails of the alerts may go online to sign up, free of charge.

Howard County will pick up half of the $3,500 yearly cost. The other half will be paid for by state and federal emergency management associations SEMA and FEMA. A $1,000 setup fee was paid for by Howard Electric Cooperative.
