COVID-19 forces Glasgow boys to bow out of own tournament

Posted

The GlasgowYellowjackets boys basketball team has been forced to withdraw from its own tournament. The tournament is set to begin, as tradition dictates, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, which this year is November 30. The annual tournament will sport a different look in this, its 90th presentation. In previous years, the Yellowjackets and Lady Jackets have played host to seven boys and seven girls teams. This year, however, the field had been lowered to just seven teams in each division.

Now, things will be even more different.

With the discovery of a positive COVID-19 case for one member of the Glasgow boys team,  the decision was made Monday morning to pull the team from the field. “The Glasgow boys basketball players have a positive COVID case and are now quarantined and will be unable to field a team for the tournament,” said Glasgow boys coach Mick Cropp. “At this point, we are still planning to host the tournament. I have adjusted the schedule for seven girls teams and six boys teams.”

Due to the change, the tournament will pit teams against one another in pool play rather than in double-elimination fashion. The Yellowjackets had been the number six seed in this year’s tournament.

“It’s a difficult situation, but it’s just kind of the world we are living in right now,” Cropp told this newspaper Monday. “I feel bad for the kids that they’re not going to get to participate in the tournament this year. It’s just unfortunate, but there’s a lot more people in worse off positions than we are.”

To accommodate the need to social distance and sanitize, each school will be allowed only 100 tickets per game, which will put the gym below 30% capacity. In addition, each game will have a two-hour time slot instead of the normal one hour and 30 minutes. This will allow time for crews to sanitize between games and cut down on interaction between fans of visiting schools. “We just hope everyone stays well and we can get some basketball in,” said Cropp.

This year’s tournament will feature boys and girls teams from Cairo, Fayette, New Franklin, Otterville, Slater, and Westran in addition to the Lady Jackets of Glasgow. The Fayette boys are slated to start play on Monday, November 30, in the 6 p.m. slot against the Cairo Bearcats. The girls from Fayette will not play until Wednesday, December 2, at 5 p.m. against the girls from New Franklin. Currently, the final game in the girls' division is set to be played on Saturday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m., and the boys' final will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. the same night.

Due to fewer teams, pool play will be utilized rather than the usual bracket style.
