The chain of C&R Markets, including grocery stores in Fayette and Boonville, have reportedly been sold to B&R Stores, Inc. of Lincoln, Nebraska.
C&R co-owner Mark Thomas told NEMOnews Media Group that he expects the sale to be complete by Monday, September 12.
“After 65 years of being a family-owned business, we’ve been approached by a company interested in buying our entire company,” Thomas said in an interview with NEMOnews Media Group. “B&R Stores Inc. has been a family-based business for over 50 years. They are based in Lincoln, Nebraska. They are in their third generation of being in the business.”
Thompson said the C&R brand will remain and the name of the stores will not change. “They wanted to keep the company whole,” said Thomas to NEMOnews. “Customers probably won’t notice a lot of changes.”
C&R Market, based in Macon, Missouri, operates stores in 10 Missouri towns including Fayette, Boonville, Slater, Fulton, Edina, Shelbina, Macon, Kahoka, Monroe City, and California.
B&R Stores, Inc., was founded in 1964 by Russ Raybould and Clayton Burnett. Today it operates as an employee-owned corporation headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. The company currently operates in multiple cities across Nebraska and western Iowa and employs more than 2,000 people, nearly 1,000 of which are employee-owners, according to information provided by the company’s website.
B&R Stores is the parent of other businesses such as Russ’s Market, SuperSaver, Cash Saver, and Grand Central Apple Market.
C&R Market opened its Fayette store, located at 600 South Church Street, in 2003.
