DAR donates Welcome Home blankets for Veterans

Posted

The Howard County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) met at the First Baptist Church on November 17. The program was given by Michelle Vogt, the Fundraising and Development Supervisor at Welcome Home in Columbia.

Welcome Home is a community that works to honor veterans and restore lives by providing transitional housing, emergency shelter, permanent housing, employment assistance, and supportive services to at-risk and homeless veterans.  These services are provided at no cost to the veterans.

The Howard County Chapter made tied fleece blankets for Welcome Home, which Michelle received at the chapter meeting following her presentation. The Howard County Chapter will also donate many other items to Welcome Home during the holidays.

The Missouri State DAR house is Roslyn Heights in Boonville. The chapter has decorated a tree for the holidays there. The theme this year is, “My Favorite Things.” Members of the Howard County Chapter decided that their favorite things are items to donate to veterans. This project was led by Lynne Alexander and Barbara Comegys. The chapter’s tree at Roslyn Heights is decorated with kitchen utensils, potholders, kitchen towels, and many other donation items. Under the tree are items such as coffee makers, microwaves, and blankets. All items from the tree will be donated to Welcome Home after the Christmas Open House and Lights of Love Tree Lighting. The tree lighting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, at Roslyn Heights in Boonville. The house will also be open on December 8, 11, 12, 13, and 14 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to tour and vote for favorite Christmas trees. The cost of a tour is $10.
