The Howard County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Post 273, will host the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Friday morning at Fayette High School.
Veterans Day falls on Monday, December 11, but since the Fayette school district doesn’t hold classes on Monday, the ceremony was moved to Friday.
The ceremony begins at 9:15 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. All area veterans are asked to attend and be recognized.
Barbara Comegys, Regent of the Howard County DAR, will serve as master of ceremonies. Members of the Howard County American Legion Post 273 will display the colors.
Fayette High School students Archer Duddenhoffer and Allen Schneiders will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the Fayette High School choir.
Fayette Mayor Greg Stidham will deliver a Mayoral Proclamation.
The guest speaker will be veteran and Howard County American Legion Vice Commander Josh Kirby.
The American Legion will then recognize all veterans in attendance by their branches of service, followed by a remembrance of those veterans who are missing in action.
A special time during each program is the presentation of the Quilt of Valor by the Peacemakers Quilters. This year’s quilt will be presented to U. S. Air Force veteran Gary A. Dann (see service bio this page).
Members of the DAR will then present a wreath and hold a moment of silence in remembrance of fallen servicemen and women.
The high school choir will perform “Fly High, You Grand Old Flag” before the colors are retired. Evan Coats and Kylie Wells will then perform “Taps” to close the ceremony.
