Three juniors from Fayette High School were selected for this year’s American Legion Auxiliary Missouri Girls State, which will be held at Lindenwood University in St. Charles on June 11-18. Lily Breitweiser, Hannah Quint, and Preslee Sunderland will attend.
Fayette Rotary Club, Fayette Optimist Club and Commercial Trust Company are sponsoring attendance for the young women. Sponsorships pay for room and board for the week-long program. Girls State is committed to not requiring a girl or her family to pay to attend. Community organizations support most attendees.
Missouri Girls State was established in 1940 at William Woods College in Fulton, and was held in recent years in Warrensburg at University of Central Missouri. It is an intensive week of government study and training, in which participants live together as self-governing citizens in hands-on experiences. Attendees are divided into mock political parties and towns, and hold elections to fill city, county, and state government positions.
To be eligible for Girls State, a participant must have high moral character, scholastic and leadership ability, display good sportsmanship, and be interested in government and current events.
Breitweiser is interested in a career in nursing and has attended a Skills USA certification apprenticeship. She hopes to attend Linn Tech to earn an LPN as a bridge to becoming an RN.
Quint is interested in a career in healthcare, and has served as a lifeguard, worked in her church nursery, and participated in softball, baseball and track, as well as various clubs.
Sunderland is vice president of her junior class, and is active in sports, various clubs, and babysitting.
