District baseball continues despite rain

Posted

District high school baseball began Thursday as Glasgow hosted the Class 1 District 11 bracket at John Donaldson Field. The district consists of host team Glasgow, along with Bosworth/Hale, Braymer/Breckenridge, Slater, Higbee, and Southwest(Livingston County).

Higbee, seeded No. 1, and second-seeded Southwest, both earned byes in the first round by virtue of their seeds.

Slater - 1

Glasgow - 16

The opening game pitted Slater against the host Glasgow. Slater jumped out to an early lead by the leadoff batter, junior Griffin Moore drawing a walk and stealing second. The next batter, sophomore Jayce Case singled and drove in Moore. That, however, was all the offense Slater could muster as they would not score again, losing 16-1.

Glasgow’s bats would come alive scoring 10 runs in the first, five in the second, and one in the third.

Sophomore Deklan Himmelberg took the hill for the Yellowjackets and earned the win. He was also 2-3 with a double.

Two Yellowjackets, juniors Drew Sanders and Skyler Morris, had perfect 3-3 games at the plate and each scored three runs while classmate Zane Johanning went 2-3 with one run scored.

Seniors Carson Frevert and Trevor Sanders each had one hit. Frevert scored three runs while Sanders scored one.

Glasgow was to play Southwest on Tuesday after this paper went to press.

Bosworth/Hale - 3

Braymer/Breckenridge - 13

Braymer/Breckenridge took the second game of the bracket, 13-3 over Bosworth Hale, as the Bobcats moved to face the Higbee Tigers in the second round. Sophomore Vincent Youtsey was the hitting star for the Bobcats, going 3-4 with two runs from the cleanup spot.

The Bobcats were scheduled to play Higbee on Tuesday after this paper went to press.

Class 2 District 12

The Class 2 District 12 bracket began on Friday at Brian Simpson Field in Harrisburg. The Bulldogs

played host to New Franklin, Salisbury, Westran, Brunswick/Keytesville/Northwestern, and Fayette. Salisbury was given the first seed while Westran held the second. Both teams garnered first round byes due to their seeds.

Brunswick/Keytesville,/Northwestern - 0

New Franklin - 7

It is a very rare high school baseball game in which three hits are enough to garner a win but three hits are exactly what the New Franklin Bulldogs got Friday evening and that was all they needed. Utilizing a strategy that had sophomore Clayton Wilmsmeyer pitching the first inning only, to be relieved by junior Caleb Hull in the second, then returning to the hill for the final two innings, Coach Erich Gerding was able to get the most of his team for the 7-0 win.

Freshmen Jacob Marshall, Tanner Bishop and Connor Wilmsmeyer each singled while Marshall, senior Tysen Dowell, Connor and Clayton Wilmsmeyer, and junior Samuel Marshall scored one run apiece and Caleb Hull scored two.

New Franklin was scheduled to move on to play Salisbury on Monday. Heavy rains, however, caused that game to be moved to Columbia’s Battle High School and their turf field.

Fayette - 0

Harrisburg - 14

In what seemed like a never-ending road trip, Fayette’s season came to an end with a 14-0 loss to the Harrisburg Bulldogs. Sophomore Anthony Alicea took the mound for the Bulldogs and got the win while sophomore Haden Kelly took the loss for the Falcons.

Junior Tyler Bartholomew, sophomores Gage Sulltrop and Kelly, and freshman Jayden Kelly each collected a hit for the Falcons.

For the Bulldogs, Alicea went 4-4 with a double and scored three runs. Sophomore James Ott went 2-4 and scored two runs while freshman Carter Bremer went 2-4 with one run scored. Sophomore Landon Edwards was 2-3 and scored a run.

Junior Tanner Lanes, sophomore Braden Wyatt, and freshman Hunter Cole, each had singles. Sophomore Austin Darwent doubled and scored two runs. Lanes and Wyatt each scored two runs. Sophomore Logan Firths rounded out the scoring with one run.

Harrisburg was scheduled to play Westran on Monday but with the heavy rains inundating the area, that game was moved to Columbia to be played at Battle High School..

Westran - 2

Harrisburg - 5

While the rain continued to fall, Harrisburg coach and host of the Class 2, District 12 tournament Chris Ackman knew the natural grass at Brian Simpson field in Harrisburg would not be usable. So it was time to look for an alternative site for Monday’s games.  Ackman, knowing of the new turf surface at Battle High School, called Battle head coach Joe Henderson to see if Battle’s field might be available. Henderson agreed and Monday evenings games, although wet at times, were able to go on without a hitch.

Harrisburg faced Westran in the opener defeating the Hornets 5-2. Sophomore Anthony Alicea took the mound for the Bulldogs and earned the win. Alicea also was the star of the night at the plate going 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

Freshman Carter Bremer, junior Tanner Lanes, and sophomore Austin Darwent each contributed a hit. Sophomores Brayden Ott, and Landon Edwards, along with freshman Carter Bremer each scored one run apiece in the victory.

New Franklin -5

Salisbury - 7

Coach Erich Gerding’s New Franklin Bulldogs came up just short in their district game against Salisbury at Battle High School Monday night. In a game played in heavy mist to pouring rain, New Franklin put themselves in a 5-0 hole in the first inning and was never able to climb out.

Of the seven runs scored against New Franklin, only two were earned. “Our first defensive inning was our Achilles heel tonight,” said  Gerding. “I like the way we battled back and gave ourselves a chance, but we dug too big of a hole for ourselves. I am still proud of this group and especially proud of our lone senior, Tysen Dowell, whose leadership and performance this year was exemplary.  I could not have asked and gotten for anything better from him all four years of his career. He did everything we asked of him when we asked and he did it very well.”

Dowell went 2-4 with two RBIs on the night and played a strong defensive game behind the plate. Sophomore Clayton Wilmsmeyer garnered two hits while freshman Jacob Marshall had one hit and scored two runs. Marshall’s classmate, Tanner Bishop, added a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Sophomore Keaton Eads contributed a hit, as did junior Samuel Marshall.

On Thursday, weather permitting, Salisbury will take on Harrisburg in the district final in Harrisburg.
