The Higbee Tigers went up against a buzzsaw last Tuesday night in the Class 1, District 12 baseball championship game falling 12-1 to Northeast (Cairo).
Higbee drew first blood in the top of the first inning when sophomore Derek Rockett doubled to centerfield to lead off the game. A passed ball allowed Rockett to move up to third before classmate Will Spilman struck out looking.
The next batter, junior Chevy Grimsley hit a sharp grounder to third, allowing Rockett to score and allow Higbee to take the 1-0 lead.
The next batter, sophomore Micah Kirby, grounded out to the pitcher.
That would be all the offense Higbee would put together for the rest of the game. The Tigers would not even draw a walk from Bearcat pitcher Logan Head who proved baffling for the Tiger batters all day.
The bearcats would score all of their runs in bunches, with three runs being scored in the bottom of the first, two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth.
Higbee used two pitchers in the rout. Grimsley started, going 3.2 innings. He struck out three while giving up 12 hits and nine earned runs. Sophomore Will Spilman came on in relief in the bottom of the fourth, giving up one hit and one earned run.
Higbee finishes the season at 9-8.
