Taylor Bottomley came within six inches of a Central Methodist school record with his first throw of the shot put finals in Davenport, Iowa on Saturday.

The Harrisburg native finished fourth out of 37 competitors with a throw of 48-4.75 in the Fighting Bee Invite.

Elliot Knernschield had the best finish of the day for the Eagles with a second-place effort of 4:31.44 in the mile. The CMU men finished fourth out of 16 teams, just 12 points behind second place Olivet Nazarene.

“It was a great day. We had a lot of people score points today, a lot of good performances and a lot of improvements,” CMU coach Mark Nelson said.

“To finish within a few points of an NAIA powerhouse like Olivet Nazarene is really encouraging to see, and I hope to see us continue to develop as the season goes on.”

Jesse Pinkley was third in the pole vault with a height of 14-8.75 and Radovan Kemboi also took third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:41.18.

Joseph Bruemmer met the NAIA “B” Standard in the 3000-meter racewalk with a third-place finish of 15:17.29.

Abdulai Rashid finished third in the triple jump (44-0) and fourth in the long jump (22-8).

“It was exciting to see Joe hit our first national qualifying mark of the year in his season debut,” added Nelson. “Some other standout performances we had included both our A and B 4x400’s running incredibly well, as well as Taylor Bottomley just barely missing the school record in the shot put by a few inches.”

Bottomley also had a sixth-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 51-5.

Former Glasgow athlete Hayden Hackman was joined on the fourth-place 4x400-meter relay by Mohammed Nyaoga, Curtis Johns and Nehemiah Colyer, finishing with a time of 3:25.52.

Pearl Morgan and Lisa Sauter had third place finishes for the Central Methodist women, who finished eighth as a team. Morgan had a time of 59.88 in the 400-meter dash and Sauter had a finish of 19:14 in the 5,000-meter run.

Antoinette Flowers was fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.27) and Jasmine Evers also had a fourth-place finish in the weight throw (48-6). Sarah King was third in the 3000-meter racewalk.

Other former area athletes who competed in Davenport were: Jada Gaines (Fayette), who finished seventh in the long jump (17-0.75), Alyssa Yung (Glasgow), who was 10th in the triple jump (33-8.75), and Kristin Stockhorst (Glasgow) who was 11th in the 400-meter dash (1:04.80).

Chris Roberts (Fayette) was 12th in the shot put with a toss of 43-5 after a pair of fouls. John Schell (Higbee) was 20th out of 37 in the shot put (39-11.5) and 21st in the weight throw (39-5.25).
