The Central Methodist University track and field program opened the season at the Dutch Athletic Classic in Pella, Iowa with excellent team and individual finishes. The CMU men finished first, while the women took second place led by record-setting freshman Antoinette Flowers.
Flowers finished first in the 200-meter dash and set a new CMU record in the 60-meter dash with a second-place finish of 7.95. Pearl Morgan won the 400-meter dash for the Eagles and Lisa Sauter won the 1,000-meter race.
Jesse Pinkley had a first-place finish for the Eagle men in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.40 meters.
“I was really impressed with our performance across the board,” head coach Mark Nelson said. “This was a tough track to compete on and I really liked the way we competed as a team. We saw the fire in the eyes out of everyone today, and I made sure to compliment them on their hunger to compete.”
Former Harrisburg athlete Taylor Bottomley finished second in the shot put with a toss of 14.19 meters, while Fayette alum Chris Roberts finished third with a throw of 14.15 meters. Higbee grad John Schell was 11th with a distance of 12.47 meters.
Glasgow alum Hayden Hackman finished eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.76 meters.
Former Fayette jumper Jada Gaines finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.10 meters.
Glasgow grad Alyssa Yung was sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.95 meters and former Lady Jacket Kristin Stockhorst was a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay.
Flowers was recognized as the Heart conference runner of the week after her record-setting performance. She broke the 60-meter dash record of 7.96 set by Michelle Momo in 2011.
“Antoinette breaking a nine-year old school record in the 60 meter dash was certainly the eye-popping result of the day, but that’s not to take away from the many great performances we had across the board,” Nelson said. “This team is going to have a fun season.”
