Chris Roberts, Taylor Bottomley, and Hayden Hackman each had second-place finishes for Central Methodist at the Principia Relays in Elsah, Illinois over the weekend.
Both the Eagle men’s and women’s 4x200-meter relays set school records at the event. The men’s quartet of Alex Cordova, Jacob Fritz, Nehemiah Colyer, and Curtis Johns clocked a time of 1:31.64, breaking the 2010 record by a full second. The same four won the 4x400 and Cordova also picked up a first-place finish in the 300-meter dash (36.20). Elliot Knernschield won the 3000-meter race (9:08.83).
“It would’ve been nice to see how the meet would have turned out had it been scored, but we competed well against some really good NCAA DII and NAIA opponents,” CMU coach Mark Nelson said. “We had lots of top finishes across the board, as well as an impressive school record. We also finished the weekend with another stellar performance in the 4x400-meter relay on tired legs, and I think that group of guys is ready to pop.”
The women’s 4x200-meter relay of Antoinette Flowers, Abbie Hale, Mason Fitzgerald, and Pearl Morgan finished second, but smashed the 2017 indoor record by almost five seconds with a 1:47.92. Morgan also finished first in the 300-meter dash with a time of 41.92.
“I continue to really enjoy how these athletes compete. For the most part, we’re putting everything out on the track when we’re out there. We’re still continuing to grow in the field events with some good throws and jumps performances,” added Nelson. “We really ran our girls in a lot of races on the track this weekend and I felt we really stepped up and competed throughout all of it, and performed well to boot.”
Roberts, an Eagle freshman from Fayette, had a throw of 47-3.75 to finish second out of 30 competitors in the shot put. Bottomley (Harrisburg) was second in the weight throw with a distance of 51-4.5.
Hackman (Glasgow) was first in the 1000-meter race and shot put during heptathlon competition, finishing second overall.
