Eagles hope for first win Saturday

Central Methodist suffered a blow Saturday afternoon, falling at No. 17 Baker University 62-7 in Baldwin City, Kansas. The game marked the Eagles’ second in a row, and the second of four out of the last five games, against a nationally ranked opponent.

Still in the hunt for their first win of the season, the Eagles face their best chance at victory when they return home Saturday against first-year varsity program William Woods.

Baker capitalized on back-to-back pick-sixes to take a 14-0 lead less than a minute into Saturday’s game. The Wildcats extended their lead over Central on their first offensive possession, 21-0, and then reaching the end zone two more times before the end of the quarter.

BU tacked on three more touchdowns in the second quarter to push their lead to 52-0 at halftime. A field goal for Baker in the third quarter made the score 55-0, before Central found the end zone at the 9:10 mark of the third quarter.

The Eagles’ lone score of the game came following a 12-play, 75-yard drive that chewed up 6:38 off the clock. Central capped the drive with an 11-yard passing touchdown from Gavin Watts to Drake Dudley.

Baker would reach the end zone one final time with less than two minutes remaining in the game, making the final score 62-7 in favor of the Wildcats.

Watts finished the game 4-for-10 for 44 yards and the touchdown. Carl Robinson had three catches for 22 yards. Dudley’s lone grab went for a touchdown. Fayette native and CMU sophomore tight end Ben Wells made one catch for nine yards.

The Eagles beleaguered rushing game picked up just 55 yards, led by Boonville native Dawan Lomax with 43 on 16 carries.

Saturday’s game against William Woods University kicks off at 1 p.m. at Davis Field.
