Eagles surprised by Statesmen in overtime

Brenda Pennington hit a 3-pointer over a double-team with one second left in overtime to give William Penn a 62-60 win over No. 8 Central Methodist on Wednesday night.

“They are extremely well coached, their little point guard made an extremely tough shot at the end,” CMU coach Mike Davis said. “A tough, tough, shot.”

Central Methodist had just 54 points in regulation, well below its previous season low of 74. The Eagles shot 37 percent from the field, 19 percent from three and 44 percent from the foul line.

Still, it looked like Central Methodist had a great chance of sending the game into a second overtime when the Eagles trapped Pennington in the corner after the ball was inbounded with six seconds left.

Daesjah Ely

Central Methodist led 27-20 at halftime, but scored just eight points in the first nine minutes of the second half as the Statesmen took a one-point lead.

Lanay Rodney scored the next 11 straight points. She made three shots from long range and had a layup on an inbounds play after throwing the ball off of an unaware defender and gathering the ball for an easy two.

Rodney finished with 18 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.

After making just three of their first 21 3-point attempts, the Statesmen made four of their last five in the fourth quarter to go up by two points with two minutes left.

“If you want to put a recipe together of how to beat us… you have a good point guard, you have people who can make threes and you play a zone,” Davis said afterward. “They did all three of those things.”

Rodney and Mercedes Jefflo each had a bucket to put CMU up by one in the final 40 seconds, but William Penn had an answer each time. Trailing by one point, Rodney drew a foul with one second left and made one of two to send the game into overtime. Central Methodist was 2-7 from the free-throw line in overtime.

Jefflo finished with 17 points and five steals. Daesjah Ely came off the bench to provide 11 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots.

CMU 81, Baker 63

On Saturday, the CMU women outscored Baker 29-9 in the third quarter of an 81-63 victory. The Eagles improved to 16-2, and 10-2 in conference play.

Central Methodist fell behind 33-18 in the second quarter, but Veronica Preciado pulled the Eagles within seven at the half with her 3-pointer.

Lanay Rodney led the Eagles with 26 points. Mercedes Jefflo had 18 points, eight steals, and six assists. Daesjah Ely had 11 points off of the bench and Ashley Martin had 10 points in just eight minutes, making five of her six field goal attempts.
