Elmore picked up by Giants after draft

Central Methodist senior Malcolm Elmore is going to get a shot at playing in the NFL. The Eagle defensive back was picked up by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent following Saturday’s draft.

“It’s hard to put into words, but if I could, I would say it was a dream come true,” Elmore said about getting the call to join the Giants.

“I’ve always thought I could do it, but to see it become a reality is a feeling I could never expect.”

Elmore reflected on his journey from Missouri Class 2 football to the NAIA, and now to an NFL training camp.

“That just goes to show that anyone who works hard enough can make their dreams come true as well,” he said.

In high school, Elmore was an All-State selection on the offensive side of the ball where he gained over 1,000 yards receiving and 1,000 rushing yards during his senior season. The Higginsville native lost only one regular season game in four years and reached the state semifinals with Lafayette County in 2015.

At Central Methodist, Elmore narrowed his focus to the defensive side of the ball, where he became elite at his position.

“Probably the best thing that has happened for me was getting coach LaQuentin Black as my DB coach my sophomore year,” Elmore said. “He really taught me everything I know and without him there’s no way I would be in the position that I’m in today.”

Elmore has eight career interceptions with 223 return yards over his career. He finished his senior season with a career-high 58 tackles and a career-best four interceptions, which ranks 28th in NAIA Division I. He was a second team All-Conference selection.

“We’re super proud of Malcolm and everything that he represents. He is the true definition of what Eagle football is all about,” defensive backs coach LaQuentin Black said. “He trusted the process and loved the grind, and we are super ecstatic for him and his family. He deserves it all.”

Elmore had a 31-yard interception return during CMU’s 42-7 win over No. 9 Evangel on senior day. The victory gave CMU five wins for just the third time since 1992 and a 4-2 record at Davis Field.

Like many athletes, Elmore is facing the challenge of preparing for the next season with gyms and weight rooms closed due to the coronavirus.

“I’ve been working out with my sister at home,” he said. “All the neighbors see us every morning whether its lifting weights, pushing cars, or flipping tires.”

Last year, the Giants held rookie mini camp May 3-4 and training camp began July 25. Whenever camp begins, Elmore will be ready.

“We are so happy for him,” said CMU head coach David Calloway. “He absolutely deserves this.”

Elmore appreciates the encouragement from his CMU football teammates.

They’re all super supportive,” he said. “They’ve already all been texting me, telling me congratulations. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”
