Ex Coach Thompson Pleads Guilty

Posted
Former Fayette High School Boys Basketball Coach and teacher Kenneth R. Thompson pled guilty Tuesday to first degree sexual misconduct.

Associate Circuit Judge Gary Sprick sentenced Thompson to one year in jail, but suspended execution of sentence. Thompson will, however, receive15 days of shock incarceration in the Howard County Jail and will be on probation for two years.

As a condition of his plea, Thompson was required to surrender his teaching license and may not have contact with the victim. He also must register as a sex offender for life, and will be required to complete any sex offender treatment his probation officer requires.

The charge Thompson pled guilty to is a Class A misdemeanor. Howard County Prosecuting Attorney Mason Gebhardt said the plea was agreed to after consultation and agreement with the victim's family.

'I set three goals when filing this case,' Gebhardt said. 'These were: appropriate punishment, treatment for his problem, and the loss of his teaching license. I'm satisfied these goals have been met.'

The case came to light Jan. 22 when Thompson, 40, vacated his position at FHS. In addition to being a coach, he also taught social studies.

According to court documents, Thompson had groped a 15-year-old female student at the school. In addition, he had sent her an estimated 300 e-mail messages, most with sexual content and innuendo. Court documents assert that at least one other student was the recipient of suggestive e-mails.

Thompson, a resident of Harrisburg, was in his second year of teaching here. Previously he had taught at Harrisburg, Boonville and Centralia.
